Hassle-Free & Affordable: Enjoying Your Indoor Pool

The Secret to Effortless Indoor Pool Maintenance

Owning an indoor pool may sound like a high-maintenance luxury, but in reality, it’s surprisingly easy to operate and maintain. After more than 20 years of caring for our indoor pool, we’ve learned a few key lessons—chief among them is that an indoor pool is shielded from external contaminants like leaves, pollen, dust, and sunlight. This single factor makes a tremendous difference in upkeep, making indoor pools far easier to maintain than their outdoor counterparts.

The Truth About Pool Chemicals

When we first bought our home, well-meaning friends and even local pool supply stores warned us about the supposed high maintenance of owning a pool. However, we quickly realized these recommendations were based on outdoor pool care. Indoor pools operate in a much more controlled environment, meaning they require fewer chemicals and less maintenance overall.

One of our biggest discoveries was that many store-bought pool chemicals are unnecessary and can even cause more problems than they solve. Instead, we rely on simple and cost-effective solutions. Household bleach (without additives) works best for chlorine, keeping levels around 2 ppm to prevent algae growth without causing a strong chlorine odor. Muriatic acid effectively lowers pH, while aeration or common household products like baking soda and borax help raise pH as needed.

The Key To Chemical Stability

Maintaining stable chemical levels is much easier than most people assume. One of the most important factors is Total Alkalinity (TA), which acts as a buffer for pH. When TA is properly adjusted, pH fluctuations become minimal, reducing the need for constant adjustments. With just a few key levels in check, an indoor pool remains balanced with very little effort.

Tips For Hassle-Free Indoor Pool Maintenance

  • Keep the pool covered when not in use. This helps control humidity and prevents unnecessary evaporation.

  • Manage humidity effectively. Our dehumidifier works well, but during warmer months, simply opening a window or door can reduce or eliminate the need to run it.

  • Heating costs are manageable. We enjoy the pool heated to 90°F. During summer (May–September), our heating costs were around $80/month when fuel prices were low, and about $150/month at higher fuel prices.

  • Stick to basic chemicals. They work better, cost less, and simplify maintenance.

  • Minimal vacuuming required. Since an indoor pool isn’t exposed to dirt and debris, vacuuming is needed far less frequently than with an outdoor pool.
